Russian Watch of the Day showcases Russian watches that have caught our attention because of their style, value, function or uniqueness.
Raketa’s Polar watches use the 2623 H mechanical movement, the same movement used on Raketa’s Pilot series. The 2623 was originally designed for polar explorers, as it can withstand extremely low temperatures. It was designed following a 1969 Soviet state order and was not made available to the public until the Perestroika.
Raketa’s current Polar series is a redesigned version of the original Polar watches that were designed for polar explorers in the late 60s. Staying true to its design inspiration, the Raketa Polar 042 features a silver dial and blue leather band. The watch features the 24-hour scale that comes with its mechanical 2623 H movement. The movement comes with 16 ruby jewels and shock resistant balance.
The Polar’s crystal is made of sapphire glass and the caseback is made of stainless steel and is etched with an image of the polar region. The case measures 43 x 11 mm in diameter and is made of stainless steel. The Polar 042 has a water resistance rating of 50 meters.
The design of Raketa’s Polar 042 is very well executed. From its stainless steel case and silver dial to its blue leather band and the details on the dial and caseback, all the aesthetic components go well together to deliver a watch that is “Polar” not only in name but also in design. The Polar retails for $745 online. While significantly more expensive than other Raketa timepieces, the Polar is, no doubt, a very impressive watch that is worth investing in especially for collectors and Russian watch enthusiasts.
