Russian Watch of the Day showcases Russian watches that have caught our attention because of their style, value, function or uniqueness.
Vostok’s Amphibian series was first released in 1968. Perhaps the best known version is the Desert Shield version which commemorated the Iraq military operation. Over the decades, the Amphibian line has rapidly expanded to include both military watches and Russian divers but most of the pieces available in the market now are newer models.
The Amphibian Automatic AM 2416B/420146 is one such example of a recent Amphibian model. While it is a newer release, the Amphibian still takes a lot of inspiration from the original line, as it still features the chrome-plated dot-dash unidirectional rotating bezel that were used in the older Amphibian models. Some of the newer watches feature a new compass bezel but the AM 2416B/420146 still features the old bezel along with a stainless steel bracelet.
The Amphibian AM 420146 has a 40 mm stainless steel case, which some might find too small for a Russian diver. It has a white dial with a grid pattern, Arabic numerals, and luminous hands and markings. The bezel features the black and red dash-dot design reminiscent of older Vostok watches. The dial also features a date window at six-o’clock.
The watch features a screw-down stainless steel back cover with the series name and serial number. Inside you’ll find the famed Caliber 2416B Automatic movement with 31 jewels. It has a power reserve of 31 hours.
The Amphibian AM 420146 is a pretty basic watch but it has a water resistant depth rating of 200 meters or 660 feet, which is really one of its best features next to its movement. The watch sells for a little over $100, which is the average price for Vostok watches.
